Son of Harpo Speaks!
A Family Portrait

Length: 8.7 hours

CD Set or Download

Bill Marx is the last living person to have worked professionally with the three Marx Brothers: his uncles, Chico and Groucho, and his father, Harpo Marx. Because Chico and Groucho had children that had written about them, Bill Marx wanted to complete the Marx Brothers’ literary trifecta by authoring a book about the personal and professional relationships that he had with his father. Son of Harpo Speaks!, in addition to offering a unique perspective of a very special man and revealing many stories never before in print, is also a book about a “too-Hollywood-to-believe” life-altering quirk of fate that ultimately brought him together with his parents.

The background for this remarkable revelation unfolded unassumingly over a glass of wine and some conversation in the famous 1960s nightclub, Dino’s Lodge, on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip. It would subsequently lead the author to explore the complex life task of dealing with his emotional scars of rejection and the secure feelings of acceptance, the latter due to his overwhelmingly good fortune of having been adopted by two loving parents. Plenty of “show-biz” and “sizzle” are also sprinkled throughout to make for a very enjoyable read.

The Laugh Makers
A Behind-the-Scenes Tribute to Bob Hope’s Incredible Gag Writers

Length: 11.3 hours

CD Set or Download

“In The Laugh Makers, Bob Mills takes us on a delightful, side-splitting journey back to the slapstick sketch comedy of television’s golden age—a long-ago era of variety, song-and-dance, brilliant patter, and a seemingly endless parade of laughs—sprung from the genius of ‘gag men,’ that talented group of wit-blessed wordsmiths to whom the book pays well-deserved homage. The Laugh Makers is a priceless collection of heretofore unpublished recollections revealing untold secrets and goings-on behind the scenes on The Bob Hope Show from Stockholm to Bora Bora, London to Peking. It’s jam-packed with stories [and] anecdotes, his guest stars, and his writers—all from a fondly remembered past that will have you chuckling from start to finish. Bob Mills is well qualified to salute the famous corps of gag men who kept the comedian knee-deep in jokes. These firsthand recollections summon up the final phase of Hope’s career―and the end of the trail for an entire brand of show business.”—Gary Owens, Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In

Deconstructing Laurel & Hardy
A Comedy-O-Rama
Hour Special

By Joe Bevilacqua
Featuring Joe Bevilacqua
and Lorie Kellogg

Length: 1.0 hours

This comedy hour combines audio from classic Laurel and Hardy movie clips with a new radio theater production in which “the boys” open a fix-it shop and recall their past failures as they handle a barrage of wacky customers.

In the new moments, full of funny sound effects and music, Joe Bev voices not only Stan and Ollie but James Finlayson, Billy Bletcher, Edgar Kennedy, and other characters, including a dog. All of the female roles, including Mae Busch, are voiced by Lorie Kellogg.

Along the way listeners are treated to hilarious moments from Hal Roach’s classic Laurel and Hardy sound films. Among the highlights of the special is when Bev intercuts a scene from the English film Blotto with the Spanish version, La vida nocturna, one of the films in which Laurel and Hardy spoke phonetically.

The New Stories of Old-Time Radio:

The duo was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comedy double acts of the early Classical Hollywood era of American cinema. Composed of thin Englishman Stan Laurel and large American Oliver Hardy, they became well known during the late 1920s for their slapstick comedy, with Laurel playing the clumsy and childlike friend of the pompous Hardy. They made over one hundred films together, initially two-reelers (short films) before expanding into feature-length works in the 1930s. Their films include Sons of the Desert, the Academy Award–winning short film The Music Box, Babes in Toyland, and Way out West. Hardy’s catchphrase, “Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into!” is still widely recognized.

The Whithering of Willoughby and the Professor: Their Ways in the Worlds

This is epic science-fiction fantasy comedy, in the Monty Python/Terry Gilliam vein, about a boy and his professor who travel willy-nilly across time and space in a failed attempt to ''cure the world of all its ills''. Produced, directed, and voiced by Joe Bevilacqua, with David Garland and Margaret Juntwait, written by Joe Bevilacqua and Robert J. Cirasa, theme music by David Garland, musical numbers written by Joe Bevilacqua, performed by the Paul Salomone Trio with Paul on piano, Ed Fuqua on bass, and Jim Mason on drums.

What the Critics Say

"Descendents of Laurel and Hardy and Holmes and Watson, among others, Willoughby and the Professor bring radio listeners along on a series of adventures, often in exotic lands and always in the more exotic land of the imagination. Judging from the hundreds of letters WNYC Radio has received about 'Willoughby,' a couple of characters who can go anywhere in the world while remaining inside the listener's radio and head is just the ticket." (David Hinckley, New York Daily News) "There's not a whole lot of comedy on radio these days. We chose to add 'Willoughby and the Professor' to our Contemporary Radio Humor collection because it is unique. One person does all the voices. Bevilacqua was a student of Daws Butler, a master of cartoon voices. It is a very interesting program." (Ken Mueller, Radio Manager, The Museum of Television and Radio)

"13,000 Roaches in a Box. For most artists working in radio theatre, the projects tend to be group efforts, with actors, a producer and director, writers, engineers, and sound effects personal. But Joe Bevilacqua is producing a successful radio theatre series almost single-handedly. The great part about radio theatre is you can portray 'any subject in any location in any circumstance, from another part of the world to the past to another dimension. you can create a whole world unto itself'. For example, in one episode, there was a box full of 13,000 roaches and, through a mishap, the box exploded. Even in TV or film, Bevilacqua asks, how could you have 13,000 roaches raining down?" (Amy Hersh, Backstage)

One Song at a Time: Tales from the Kerrville Folk Festival

by Joe Bevilacqua Narrated by Joe Bevilacqua

Length: 1 hr

Founded by Rod Kennedy, the Kerrville Folk Festival has run annually since 1972. It is the longest continuously running music festival of its kind in North America. For 18 straight days and nights each May and June, over 30,000 guests come from all over the world to experience the magic of what we simply call "Kerrville". The Festival is known internationally as a Mecca for singer-songwriters of varying musical styles. It’s a place where those just developing their skills have the opportunity to play their music alongside master craftsmen.

Over 1,500 outstanding singer-songwriters have been presented on the Festival’s stages since the beginning. More than just a "folk music" festival, Kerrville offers music of many styles including traditional folk, bluegrass, acoustic rock, blues, country, jazz, and Americana. The common thread is songwriting. The focus of the festival is to promote emerging artists while giving our audience exposure to both new and recognized, seasoned talent.

What the Critics Say

"The Making of the War of the Worlds Broadcast is engaging, informational, and sound rich. This program, like the original War of the Worlds, rates a listen. Thankfully, the producer interviewed WOW producer John Housman not long before he died [on the 50th anniversary of the landmark broadcast, Halloween of 1988]. The story of this legendary Orson Welles broadcast is for the most part allowed to unfold through descriptions by Housman, and writer Howard Koch, along with voices recorded at Grover’s Mills’ 50th anniversary event. You can hear traces of amazement in the voices of people who heard that broadcast 70 years ago. Housman, reflecting 20 years ago on why the program still holds fascination, said: 'It's history. It’s one of the great events of the new age of mass communications.' True still."

Combining story-telling, documentary audio, radio drama, and original music, Radio Tales are vivid recollections of the Summer of Love, the Days of Rage, discovering the wilderness, and the dysfunctional families that propelled so many of us to create our own realities. These wild and edgy tales dispel the notion that if you remember the sixties you weren't really there.

In "Getting Lost", Bernstein contrasts personal experiences of being lost in the wilderness, as a young hippie gets lost in Big Sur on her first trip out west and then 30 years later as a seasoned hiker, when she gets lost in a canyon in Southern Utah and meets the many faces of Coyote the Trickster.

In "Hidden Waters", Bernstein explores life and death on underground rivers and underwater waterfalls, the ghosts of once abundant salmon fisheries that were formally waterfalls and rapids, now inundated behind the dams on the Columbia River, and then a culverted river in the producer's hometown on the day of her father's funeral.

Radio Tales for the Road was broadcast on Oregon Public Broadcasting, KBOO-FM, and other stations in 2000 and 2003.

A seal who can't balance? An elephant who always forgets? A green cow who walks on her front feet? These are just some of the wacky characters from the unique mind of Daws Butler, the man who voiced most of the classic Hanna-Barbera characters--Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw and Snagglepuss, to name a few. Uncle Dunkle and Donnie is a collection of imaginative, never-before-released cartoon scripts by Butler, who also worked on the classic 1960s Jay Ward "Fractured Fairy Tales" and "Aesop and Sons" animated cartoons. The book was edited, co-written and illustrated (in retro Hanna-Barbera style) by Butler protégé Joe Bevilacqua, who has also recorded an audio "cartoon" book of UNCLE DUNKLE AND DONNIE, doing all the voices himself!

What the animation industry is saying about UNCLE DUNKLE AND DONNIE: "It all started with Daws Butler--actor, writer, teacher--writing UNCLE DUNKLE AND DONNIE children's stories with exquisite sophisticated humor but always resonating with gentle and subtle lessons in morality. Then came Joe Bevilacqua--also actor, writer and producer--vocally bringing to life all of the charming characters in the Daws Butler book. Reading and listening to UNCLE DUNKLE AND DONNIE is a delightful experience that you and your family can and will enjoy!" - June Foray, legendary voice actress (Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Witch Hazel, Granny)

"Any cartoon fan can recognize Daws Butler's multitude of voices, but few know of his writing. Butler, a purveyor of witty wordplay and twisty tales, will surprise and amuse readers. These stories now come to life as told by the hilarious Joe Bevilacqua, man of 97 voices!" - Linda Simensky (Senior Director of Programming for PBS Kids)

IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN,
NEW STORIES
FROM OLD TIME RADIO

Chapter Fourteen
Co-written by Joe Bevilacqua
& Robert Cirasa

There are twenty short stories to be found in this book, and honestly, I can say that all of them are quite good, and they all impressively capture the flavor of the original programs. That's no easy task when you're writing short story fiction based around characters that were designed for use in an aural medium. Ohmart set few stipulations before the authors, but one of them was that the programs written about must've originated on radio. Therefore, we see no stories of The Thin Man, The Shadow, or Have Gun Will Travel. While that did knock out quite a few great shows, we still get plenty of good reading. --SPERDVAC's Radiogram

It would be impossible to comment on each of the stories in this collection, but the reviewer found the whole group to be compelling, absorbing, skillfully plotted, and often surprising. They were perfect matches for the radio shows which inspired them. The short biographies of the authors suggest a mix between experienced professionals, with lengthy credits, and first-time fiction writers, but all the works demonstrate a seasoned, polished construction making it difficult to select a favorite, or "best of show." The tales in this wondrous volume deserve a wide audience. --Radio Recall
